The Cactus Garden of Lanzarote Canary Island

Jardin de Cactus

Hidden away below the constant ocean winds of Lanzarote sits the Jardin de Cactus, or the Cactus Garden, which is home to over 400 varieties of cacti and succulents.  The terraced bowl carved into the volcanic lava rock has no guard rails but offers a magnificent view over the grounds.

barrel cactusSorted by types and region many cacti sit among each other from around the world.  It is the most assorted collection I have ever seen or heard of as far as the cactus goes.  Handlaid paths and walkways navigate through the garden.  Once your fear of falling off into a bed of thorns goes away it is quite stunning to compare the species which all evolved to basically do the same thing, live in arid conditions.

An hour is a conservative amount of time to inspect the grounds provided you don’t have a detailed interest in cacti.  You can spend more time perusing the gift shop or having coffee at the cafe.  There is also a windmill that was used to grind meal from grains at some point in time and sits among the garden off to the side.  A narrow set of stairs takes you into where the working parts are.

If you are a plant person or looking for something laid back and at your own pace to do in Lanzarote stop and check it out.  I underestimated this garden and collection but was glad I stopped to check it out.   Cacti big and small alike was well worth the time and made for an enjoying stop.
